Message from the President, May 2020

Louise E. Wilkins-Haug, MD, PhD

Nothing prepared us for the COVID19 pandemic. As a global society, our condolences go to those who have lost loved ones and colleagues. And our support and gratitude to those continuing to work on the front lines. For clinicians, researchers, and educators, please be safe, take care of yourselves and know that all efforts are highly valued.

ISPD is committed to supporting clinical care, education and research during these complex times. Our collaboration corner with COVID pregnancy registries, the toolbox for trainees and education offerings are being continually updated for these new challenges.

Continuing research and evidence-based care is needed during such times. Our goal as a society is to support these ongoing challenges as new paradigms emerge. Pregnancy registries for COVID+ women include the Pregnancy Coronavirus Outcomes Registry (PRIORITY) at UCSF and International Registry of Coronavirus Exposure in Pregnancy (IRCEP). This site also has multilanguage provider and patient pregnancy specific COVID+ information available.

Collaboration, engagement of the next generation and year-round education will continue to be priorities for ISPD, although perhaps through new avenues. The “Collaboration Corner” on the ISPD website offers a way to promote studies requesting either additional patients or colleagues for partnership. As trainees are especially vulnerable during such times, an online virtual community for them is being developed. And lastly, with cancellation of the Montreal meeting, our challenge is to convert the joys and excitement of the annual meeting to an online platform. Over the next year, as we anticipate hosting the May 2021 conference in Edinburgh, we will continue to incorporate focused approaches to provide year-long value to our members.

Stay safe and healthy.
